Most dogs really enjoy the beach. Unfortunately, in our country the majority of beaches don’t allow dogs, although little by little it seems like this is changing. Public opinion is becoming increasingly aware about respecting our beaches and is considering whether or not it has more to do with dogs or uncivilized people, with dog or without.
Thanks to social pressure there are more and more beaches that are becoming pet-friendly. You can find a complete guide to these beaches here.
TIPS FOR ENJOYING THE BEACH WITH YOUR DOG
Any time the animal leaves the house and especially if they are going to be off leash, it’s very important (besides from being legally mandated) that they have a properly registered microchip. In the Autonomous Communities where a rabies vaccine is obligatory, make sure that you carry with you the immunization record.
It’s very difficult getting beaches to allow dogs, which is why we must be extremely civil in order to avoid there being any “excuse” not to do so. Always bring baggies with you for your animal’s droppings and don’t let them urinate on the sand. Be respectful with the other people on the beach and keep your dog from bothering them.
Take an umbrella. Dogs thermoregulate worse than us, so it’s very important that you save them a spot in the shade, as well as provide them with fresh water. Dogs can suffer burns and allergies to sunlight, especially those that have white coats or areas that are devoid of hair: make sure they rest in the shade. Be especially careful with heat waves. You can use their favorite blanket to stretch on the sand and use like a towel.
The sea water is very beneficial for most dog’s skin, nevertheless, it’s very important to shower them with fresh water upon returning home, since the sea water in contact with the skin for a long time often causes itching and allergies, which can become very severe.
Play with them. Bring their favorite toys as well as balls, frisbees and sticks. Both of you will have a great time while also strengthening the bond between you. The majority of dogs love the water, but many of them feel afraid the first few times, especially if there are waves. Teach them in positive. You go in first and then call them with lots of care, don’t ever get impatient or angry if they don’t want to or are fearful. If you’re calm, they will calm down. Never force them. If they can’t be convinced to go in the sea, you can use an inflatable pool.
Exercise in the sea is highly recommendable for the majority of dogs with orthopedic problems, since it allows them to move freely without having to support all of their weight. In these cases or if you have decided to practice adventure sports together, such as canoeing, it’s important to use a lifejacket to prevent possible accidents.
Furthermore, in summer of 2014 the first water park for dogs opened in Spain. It’s located about 30 minutes from Barcelona and has been a huge success.
